The Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta is a divine song sung by Lord Shri Krishan to Arjun Dev in the Sanskrit language. It was later transcribed by Maharishi Ved Vyas Ji into 700 verses, divided into 18 chapters. Of these verses, 574 were spoken by Lord Shri Krishan, 74 by Arjun Dev, 41 by Sanjay, and 01 by King Dhritrashtra.
The Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta is a sacred text for Sanatani Hindus, as it contains the direct words of Lord Shri Krishan, who is revered as the Supreme Power of the Universe. He urges all to abandon their dharmas (rituals) and surrender to him, promising forgiveness of sins and bestowal of eternal bliss, thus liberating them from the cycle of birth and death. Lord Shri Krishan teaches that the ultimate goal of human life is to worship the Supreme God—‘Me’. Through his divine play, miracles, teachings, and cosmic form, he establishes himself as the Omnipotent, Imperishable Creator and Destroyer of the universe.
The phrase ‘Everything is in Shri Krishan, and Shri Krishan is in Everything’ encapsulates this belief.
Extracted from the ‘Bhishma Parva’ section of the epic Mahabharat, the Geeta’s principles are universal, transcending gender, caste, age, and life stages (whether one is a sannyasi or a householder). It addresses various aspects of life such as the soul, body, Supreme God, karma, devotion (both Triguna and Nirguna), deities, maya, life, death, yoga, and many other significant topics.
With Lord Shri Krishan’s grace and blessings of our Param Poojniye Shri Guruji—Mahant Shri Mukund Raj Baba Punjabi (Shri Parimal Wale Babaji) of Vishal Shri Geeta Bhawan in Sector 52, Chandigarh—and our Guru Mata Param Poojniye Shri Akka Ji (Tapasvini Shri Rukmini Baiji Punjabi) from Shri Krishan Ashram, Alegaon, Param Poojniye Shri Shanta Baiji, Faridabad—I, Subodh Muni Punjabi, along with my younger Guru Brother Keshav Mahajan have undertaken the translation of this sacred text. Our Great Grand Guruji Shri Jayati Raj Babaji Punjabi had translated it into Easy Hindi about 97 years ago. Our aim is to present it in simple English for our new generation and those interested in reading this holy Hindu book in English. We have endeavored to imbue our translation with the sweet essence of the Geeta’s teachings.
My lifelong interest has been to delve deeper into the meanings of the Geeta’s verses. With my mother’s blessings and teachings focused solely on Lord Shri Krishan and adherence to the path laid out in the Geeta, I have pursued this sacred knowledge. My Guruji once said while teaching me: “I am very happy to teach you the Geeta; it also serves as a revision for me after many years. Though I have been engaged in other religious activities and translations for seminars, teaching you brings me immense pleasure because Lord Krishan is my soul and the Geeta is its nourishment.”
Keshav Mahajan and I hope that our efforts in writing the English Edition of Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta are accepted by God. We are grateful for His grace and our Gurus’ blessings. We ask for forgiveness for any errors and seek your blessings, good wishes, and love to encourage us further in our religious and spiritual endeavors. We hope for the best for all.
